Day One: The Three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

NETS-S:
  • Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
Objectives:
Analysis: The second grade student will investigate:
  • The importance of recycling by listening to the story Michael Recycle and will write down at least two reasons people should recycle in their student journals after the story is read to them
Application: The second grade student will construct:
  • A concept map showing knowledge of the different types of recycled materials through the use of Kidspiration with at least 90% accuracy after visiting the internet resources provided
Comprehension:The second grade student will describe:
  • And understand the importance of the environmental benefits of recycling by typing a few sentences beneath their concept map with no grammatical errors

Materials:
  • Computers with internet access
  • Kidspiration software
  • Book- Michael Recycle
  • Student journals
  • Pen/pencils


Instructions and Procedures:
  • Ask students “Does anyone know what recycling is?”
  • Have a few students share their response with the class
  • Then ask “Why do you think recycling is important?”
  • Next, read the book Michael Recycle to the class
  • Ask students to write two reasons why recycling is important in their student journals
  • Present Powerpoint to go over the terms reduce, reuse, and recycle
  • Show students some items that you can recycle and provide internet resources they can refer to for additional help
  • Have students create a concept map using Kidspiration software
    • o Instruct students to type the word “Recycle” into the idea box
    • o Then have students find pictures online or type the names of things that can be recycled
    • o Have students type a few sentences beneath concept map to show understanding of the importance of recycling
    • If time allows have a few students share their maps with the class.

Assessments:
  • Informal- Overall participation in discussion about recycling
  • Formal- Powerpoint Quiz testing knowledge
  • Formal- Completion and overall quality of concept map
